Providing Financial Survival for Cancer Patients

Stars with Heat has been established to assist cancer patients manage financially whilst under going treatment for cancer.

My aim as the Founder and CEO of Stars with Heat is to fall asleep one night knowing that all cancer patients in Australia can easily access some level of financial support.    Too many people in Austraiia get a cancer diagnosis and then realise that  Medicare does not meet all the costs and that those Medicare does not meet are incredibly expensive and that the finances they have set aside for such a situation is not going to stretch as far as they thougt it would so before you go past us to another charity think about the following:

• So what is your back up plan?  Could you afford to have 9 months to a year off work unpaid?

• if you or someone you loved got cancer how would you manage financially through treatment?
•   
• Do you know what costs Medicare covers and more importantly which one's it doesn't?
•   
• If you found yourself or your family struggling financially would you want to know that there was one organisation who providing financial assistance to cancer patients was all they focussed on? 
•   
• Thus ALL money raised and donated to them went towards every area of addressing this need from providing financial counsellors, researching the financial needs, funding and conducting research to into the financial impact of cancer so that all cancer organisiations could make informed decisions that would assist in meeting these needs?
•   
• Would you like to be able to access financial support no matter where you lived in Australia and for it to be Free?
•   
• That is the vision of Stars with Heart we do work with other cancer charities that are targetting this issue however, we do believe and feel that this issue should not just be apart of what another organisation does it is too big and should not have to compete for funding within that organisation it needs to have funds directly put to it as so far it is the unmet need in the cancer community.

• There are organisations now addressing this need (and we have put links to them on our web page) but with 1:2 people before they are 85 likely to get a cancer diagnosis, only a third of people in Australia having enough superannuation to last through retirment and personal savings dwindling the chances are that when someone hears those horrible words "You have cancer" they will eventually need some sort of financial support whether that is accessing a free financial counsellor to work with them to make their debts manageable, ensure they are aware of their rights in relation to those debts and not being told any "fairy stories" that have them paying back money in their new financil circumstances they are not legally obliged to and ensuring that they have access to all the money they should have access to and all their Centrelink payments.  Or it may be that they need to access a financial planner someone that can advise on how to maximise the assets and income they do have?  Or a lawyer to protect their rights and to make sure they are getting a fair deal or that they do not loose their home.  Or just someone that can take on the bills they are no longer able to pay after all these things have been done?

• Basically we want every cancer patient or anyone who is at risk of having cancer to know that if their back up plan fails there is another and it is easy to access, has all the services, information and support available in one place.
•    

 Why Are We Called Stars with Heart?

Because, quite simply, everyone who helps us truly is a star with a heart.
